Philosophy & Objectives

Foundation and funding

“A wonderful task - there is nothing better than letting people find themselves through the medium of their voice.”

The Hildegard Zadek Foundation was founded in 1997 with the aim of supporting young singers in their careers.  The initiative arose from knowledge of today's music business, from decades of experience in teaching young people from many nations, and the resulting sense of responsibility.  Hildegard Zadek Foundation initiated its “Special Singing Competition” based on these considerations.

From 1999 to 2019, the Foundation held an international singing competition every two years with a special emphasis on contemporary music and new compositions. Interpreting modern music requires a precise, concentrated engagement with the "new and "now" that is individually independent, both mentally and artistically.

The competition was not just about winning. All participants,  including those who did not make it to the final round, were helped in their personal assessment and orientation, through feedback rounds with the appointed jury members, and accompanied  as they continued on their way.  In addition to the cash prize, the winners benefited from arranged public concert appearances, the opportunity to work with artistic directors of the Young Singers, and scholarship support.

Since 2002, the Hildegard Zadek Foundation has worked closely with the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (MDW). The MDW made its organisation available and granted use of its premises, giving the competition its full support.

Today, it is increasingly difficult for young singers to enter into professional life.  The Hilde Zadek Foundation is responding to changing circumstances with a new orientation: starting 2021, in place of the Hilde Zadek Competition, the Foundation will award grants that are directly linked to the opera studios of large international opera houses.

This support will build a bridge between studies and the stage and give young singers the opportunity to develop and consolidate their skills in collaboration with experienced artists. The HZF thanks its growing network of sponsors and partners who work with the Foundation to enable as many young singers as possible to benefit from this opportunity.
